OLDHAMMER...MOVIES!?

Top 10 Grimy, Dark, Horrific, Fantasy films to inspire your OLDHAMMER hobby!

Want something to put you in the mood to paint some lead?

Want some noise in the background while you tinker with your army list?

Are you just bored and want to watch something WEIRD?

I have a list of films for you!

(It starts off fairly mainstream, but I promise it gets more and more weird and wonderful!)

Chaotic Entities: Top 10 OLDHAMMER inspiration films! (No particular order)

#10 Black Death

Black Death is an action horror film with very cool, dirty, grimy, vibes!

Not very much fantasy though...

Watch it free on Tubi: https://tubitv.com/movies/439507/black-death?start=true&tracking=google-feed&utm_source=google-feed

#9 Van Helsing

Put the fantasy back in! WAIT WAIT TOO MUCH!

Just imagine the bad CGI is just your poorly painted minis come to life!

Watch it free on Daily Motion: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3q3md9

#8 Army of Darkness

A horror fantasy classic! Well known, and well loved.
Undead players, get your fix!

Watch it free here (careful, pop ups!): https://www.effedupmovies.com/army-of-darkness-dir-cut-1992/

#7 Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter
Such a fun film, made by Hammer, fantasy adventure fun at its finest!

#6 The Head Hunter
Dark and gory, about a warrior searching for the monster that killed his daughter.
It's like having a (more rational) chaos warrior protagonist. SO RAD!
Watch it free here:
(CAREFUL, TONS OF ADS ON THIS SITE!!!!!)

#5 The Sword and the Sorcerer
Daemons. Gore. Triple bladed Rocket Sword! Need I say more?

#4 Jabberwocky

A dark fantasy comedy by Terry Gilliam, eh? There's no holy grail here! A young peasant with no interest in adventure or fortune is mistaken for the kingdom's only hope when a horrible monster threatens the countryside...kind of!  Watch it for free here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfR0eUy-hnc

#3 Hard to be a God
Now we're getting into the nitty-gritty!
Warning! Not for everyone, this one is strange but it is PERFECT for some WHFB inspiration. It's as if you were watching the old black and white art come to life right off the page!
But with no real story or context...and its in Russian! EXTREMELY gross (a lot of sh*t for some reason, but beautifully immersive in its weird ugliness.

#2 A Field in England
Want to know what EXACTLY happens when the last few soldiers in your Empire army run off the table in terror? This is the movie for you! This is a weird one, but beautiful and well shot.

#1 Archer: Fugitive from the empire

Synths, and Snake Men and DEATH DEALER oh my!

What a fun, weird, low budget fantasy film! It looks like some painted lead minis came to life...perfection.

You can watch it for free here: https://archive.org/details/archer-fugitive-from-the-empire-1981

Enjoy!

  1. Some good films there, these are my favourites, not in order:

    Flesh and Blood (classic feels)
    Solomon Kane (moody chaos/mutants)
    Black Death (classic feels)
The Last Valley (imagine it is Sigmar vs Ulric)
Season of the Witch (classic feels)
    Forbidden Kingdom (Kislev style chaos)
    Sleepy Hollow (classic feels)
Countess Dracula (the birth of the vampire counts)
    Witchfinder General (classic feels)

  3. I don't think Flesh and Blood could be much more warhammer if it tried.
It is for my money, the most warhammer film. Empire/Tilean mercenaries / sellswords led by a captain who is guided by a religious fanatic with the opposition being a noble who is a mad inventor with war machines.

It would be a great WFRP campaign.

The Last Valley is about mercenaries of Catholic and Protestant faith who have some divisions to make. If you swap those 2 faiths for Sigmar and Ulric it fits perfectly into the old world.

Countess Dracula is one of Hammers Karnstein Trilogy, 3 loosely connected vampire films which were clearly responsible for warhammers Carstein vampire name.

    1. Last valley was great, I love how the witch got "mercy" XD brutal. And the idea of moving the shrine was so funny to me...especially if you imagine it as I did, "3 feet to the left!" "NO!" LMAO
